Wonderfully-illustrated book brings to life in glorious and explores this rich historic background and the milieu that lead up to the establishment of the movement before surveying six of its most important practitioners: Chalermchai Kositpipat, Panya Vijinthanasarn, Sompop Budtarad, Rearngsak Boonyavanishkul, Thongchai Srisukprasert and Alongkorn Lauwatthana. Neotraditional does not mean hyper-conservative or reactionary to avant-garde art. Conversely, within the conventional framework and Buddhist doctrine, Thai artists freely amalgamate all kinds of stylistic fusions including traditional mural art, Hindu-Buddhist mythological painting, Flemish art, British art, fantastic realism, surrealism and pop in order to interweave alluring surfaces that seduce viewers into the realm of imagination, with a virtuosity and unpredictability that reflect the multifaceted qualities of Thainess. About the author Andrew J. West is a Bangkok-based writer who has written extensively about Thai art, including as an art critic for Bangkok Post. He is author of the forthcoming Thai Contemporary Artists Directory, Destiny to Imagination: Prateep Kochabua (2013) and his art fiction novel Silpa: the Art of Love (Ruk Nai Roy Silp) was published in the Thai language in 2008. His first solo art exhibition Three Worlds (สามโลก) was held at the prestigious Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in 2014. West was born in 1967 in Armidale, NSW, Australia, and studied writing and journalism at the University of Western Sydney (UWS), graduating with an MA (Writing). He has been living in Thailand since 2003. West is currently teaching at the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) and has guest lectured in art criticism at Silpakorn University.
